{"id":38,"date":"2015-05-21T22:24:06","date_gmt":"2015-05-22T04:24:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grad.biology.ualberta.ca\/bear\/?page_id=38"},"modified":"2015-05-21T22:40:14","modified_gmt":"2015-05-22T04:40:14","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/bear.biology.ualberta.ca\/?page_id=38","title":{"rendered":"About the Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: wp_bogus_font;\">Rail-based transportation offers considerable efficiency and economy, but it conveys a risk of mortality for people and wildlife that is sometimes high enough to threaten local populations.\u00a0 This situation characterizes grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) in Banff National Park where mortality from train strikes has increased dramatically over the last 15 years without explanation.\u00a0 Risk of mortality is assumed to begin with hypothesized attraction to agricultural products spilled on the rail, natural and invasive edible plants favoured by rail disturbance, the presence of scavenging opportunities from other rail-killed animals, and increased travel efficiency.\u00a0 Mortality risk is presumed to increase both numerically (as a function of frequency) and functionally, from the failure of bears either to detect approaching trains or escape the track bed quickly.\u00a0 The functional effects, in turn, are hypothesized to result from topography, interference from other kinds of human infrastructure or other bears, and exacerbating effects of visibility and weather.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-CA\"><span style=\"font-family: wp_bogus_font;\">We are conducting a five-year project to investigate each of these hypotheses and to identify effective forms of mitigation. \u00a0In collaboration with biologists from Parks Canada, we are measuring habitat selection and movement of bears fitted with GPS collars, monitoring the distribution, abundance and seasonal changes in each of spilled agricultural products, bear foods, and rail-caused mortality for all wildlife. We are also estimating rail use at specific locations by bears and other mammals and assessing several physical attributes of the rail, including the surrounding aspect, slope, hydrology, and magnetic properties.\u00a0 We will compare these attributes at locations with and without strikes, to generate a predictive model of mortality risk and use it to identify testing sites for a mitigation device we are developing to alert bears to approaching trains.
